Footprints Engraved In Heart 👣 |Short Story

She was blushing. She knew he was going to propose to her. They held hands and walked towards the sea. He remembered!!! She thought happily. She had always wanted to get a proposal near the sea.

It was going to be one hell of a romantic story of theirs. She had already planned what and how she would tell her friends their story. As they neared the sea, the breeze blew her hair and he glanced at her through the side of his eyes. They didn’t talk much. Her heartbeat was high. She just went along with him. Both not willing to break this silence.

They had been childhood sweethearts. Their parents were the best of friends so it was natural that they would end up spending so much time together. Everybody teased them. She wouldn’t mind though.

They reached their favorite spot. Leaving their footprints behind washed away by the sea. She looked at him with anticipation in her eyes. He looked deep down her eyes which touched her soul. Finally ready to speak. She was nervous for some reason.

” Set me free Anna. Set yourself free. Start your birthday on a new note. I will love you forever but you need to let me go.”

The reality hit her hard. A flood of memory came back to her. She couldn’t say anything. Just the flashback. It was last year on her birthday. They were standing right here when Mike proposed to her. She couldn’t believe her eyes. There he was kneeling down with a flower ring in his hand. She had of course said yes. It was like her dream come true. She screamed out loud. Happily. They were going to marry. She couldn’t wait to tell her friends and family. But that had to wait. Out there in the sea was a drowning man. In an attempt to save him, Mike had jumped in. He had almost gotten hold of him when the high tide threw him further away from the shore. Anna screamed again. This time frantically for help. Nobody came. There was bloody no lifeguard. She couldn’t see him anymore. He was lost from her view. He was lost forever.

She started crying for the first time in that one year. She had kept it all in her. She couldn’t register what had happened in that one year. It was all lost. All she knew was that he was going to come back to her. She was clinging to her past. She cried her heart out. Mike was beside her. Slowly disappearing. The breeze brushed past her lips. It felt like he was kissing her. She could feel him. He was close. He whispered, “Everything is going to be fine, you have got nothing to worry about. Just move on. Move on Anna. For us”.

Her heart felt lighter somehow. She turned back to return. This time just one pair of feet leaving the mark behind and the blowing wind erasing the marks.

PS: For all those who have loved and lost…

I Heart You All ❤

We had a challenge for authors to write a retelling of Midsummer Night’s Dream. It has ended but… 😃 I like your writing. If you would like, if you have the time, and a story in your head, I’m inviting you to write a short story for the anthology. We publish the book at the end if the year.

This is a great story. There are so many who are stopped at a point in their life and don’t tend to move forward…And it is necessary if they are motivated to leave their painful past and move ahead as life is valuable and should not be wasted or stopped for a memory…

And I would love to use this story of yours ahead… If you have the permission. I would love to invite you as a writer in my webzine and as a starter I want to use this post…

Let me explain… Have a look at this link – (https://candlesonline.wordpress.com/category/short-stories/story-relay/)

We are the writers who write articles on a weekly topic but for a change sometimes we write story parts in a Story Relay. Story Relay is written by many, extending each part from where the previous writer has left. So I want this particular story of yours to be extended.

Let me know…. email me your wordpress username to add you to the webzine as a contributor… Only if you wish to… Waiting for you response.

    Regards, CP
